THE FILM

GOODNIGHT PINEAPPLE is an intimate and distinctive portrait of a man who has built his entire life around listening while dealing with the difficulties of hearing loss.

On the surface, the film is about Michael McGlynn: his childhood, his stubbornness, the creation of Anúna, his family, Ireland, Iceland and his hearing loss.

Beneath that is a larger question: what happens to a person's identity when the ability they most strongly associate with themselves begins to change?

This is not a film about defeating disability. Michael continues through memory, colour, shape, technology, stubbornness and the people around him. The film allows pubs, swearing, pineapples, cold water and small absurdities to sit alongside something much more serious: the fear of losing a part of yourself.

GOODNIGHT PINEAPPLE is a warm, funny and at times painful film about hearing, creativity and stubbornness — and about continuing to be yourself when the body changes the conditions.

DIRECTOR

GOODNIGHT PINEAPPLE was written, directed, filmed and edited by Swedish filmmaker Björn Rallare.

Rallare works with a documentary approach centred on presence, people and story. His films aim to stay close to their subjects and to find what needs to be felt as much as what needs to be explained.

Björn Rallare is a Swedish filmmaker, screenwriter and producer based in Linköping. With a background in graphic design, music and cultural production, he now works primarily with documentary and narrative film, both independently and commercially. His films have screened at around thirty international festivals and received several awards and cultural recognitions. Alongside commissioned work, he develops independent films through Havanna Produktion. His work is driven by an interest in human behaviour, identity, belonging and the tension between personal history and the present moment.
